Stain Protection
Accidents and spillages are commonplace so it is important that we protect our carpets, flooring and upholstery from any possible staining and everyday wear and tear. Protection treatments for carpets and upholstery such as Stain Guard or Scotchguard penetrate deep into the fibres creating an invisible and odourless barrier. These stain protectors can be applied to surfaces such as wool carpets, synthetic carpets, hard flooring and upholstery after cleaning and work to keep them looking like new for longer.
Following treatment, protected carpets are easy to clean as spillages remain on the surface before it has the chance to stain. It also aids fibres to resist soiling, allowing for easier vacuuming of the carpet. It is non-toxic and hypoallergenic making it completely safe for your children and pets.
How does carpet protector work?
When carpets and fabrics are manufactured, there are tiny gaps in the fibres which are left unfilled by the dyeing process. This is where dirt, grease and oils build up when the particular material is used – in the example of carpets, this residue is trodden in and results in ‘traffic lines’; darker areas within the carpet, where it is most commonly walked on. All of this not only looks unsightly but also reduces the overall lifespan of your carpet or upholstery.
Stain treatment works by coating the fabric and carpet fibres and filling in these tiny gaps. This also produces a non-stick layer on the fibres which resists particles as well as water and oil-based liquids. Whilst no carpet protection treatment is 100% guaranteed to resist all stains, they resist most, and at the very least buy a bit of time for you to get the stain up before it soaks in.
One of the problems with stain protection or carpet protection products is that they’re clear so they form an invisible barrier when they’re applied and, since your treated fabrics don’t attract or retain dirt, once it’s been on for a while, you can’t always tell the difference! But this is similar to having a waterproof membrane on a tent – you can’t see it, but you can tell it’s working when it’s throwing it down outside and you’re still dry. For your carpet, this means that should you – heaven forbid – spill a glass of red wine on your cream carpet (the stuff of nightmares!), with the stain protector applied, the wine will sit on top of the carpet fibres for a while rather than soaking in, which will help you to clean it up before that happens.
Do I need carpet stain protection and what will I get for my money?
We recommend that you consider stain protection for any of your carpets and upholstery where you will be having food and drink, on any pale carpets or fabrics, as well as close to entrances or at high-traffic areas (kids coming in from football trailing mud everywhere, anyone?). This ensures that you have fabric protection right where you need it the most.
